Consumers are expected to keep their ecological footprint in check by shopping sustainably, reduce waste and reduce emissions. We are being told that we are all responsible for the damage being done to our planet. At the same time products seem to be made not to last and trying to find a product in the supermarket that is not wrapped in plastic is a challenge. When products like this are being made, is it fair to expect consumers to make the right choice? 

Initiative for Sustainable and Responsible Business Conduct (IDVO) is a coalition of businesses, academics, religious organisations, trade unions and civil society organisations. Together they advocate for legislation in the Netherlands that ensures the environment and human rights are respected throughout companies’ value chains. By making producers responsible for the practices in their value chain, making the right decision will become a no-brainer for consumers. Obviously, MOYU fully supports this initiative!

MOYU was created with a vision to once live on an even greener planet and to give nature a hand. Voluntarily we are going all-in to ease the burden on mother nature. By making products that have less negative impact on the environment (less emissions, water-use and logging), that last longer because they are rewritable up to 500 times and by planting a tree for every notebook sold. We do this because we believe that the best thing to do with money, is to give it back to nature. Unfortunately, voluntary commitment is not enough in most cases and many companies’ value chains still directly and indirectly contribute to terrible working conditions and insufficient consideration for the environment. This is why we support IDVO and want binding rules that ensure companies in the Netherlands tackle issues regarding human rights and the environment in their value chains.

Many producers do not consider societal and natural costs that making their products entail. Loss of biodiversity, polluting water and processing waste are all examples of indirect costs (or externalities). In most cases, a producer only pays the financial costs of a certain good or product, which makes these externalities someone else’s problem. By supporting IDVO’s legislation we hope producers will be held accountable for all costs their products entail. For example, by looking at ‘true pricing’ and determining a fair and all-inclusive price for products.

We are all living on the same planet and all of us need nature for our existence. What good is a big pile of money when the earth is destroyed? Pointing the finger at the consumer because they buy a polluting product makes no sense to us, so that is why we are in favour of this legislation. By holding the producer accountable, we tackle the root of the problem and create awareness for both companies and consumers. And if anyone is not yet voluntarily cleaning up their own mess, to make them. Because the world would be a better place if everyone did.

MOYU supports Initiative for Sustainable and Responsible Business Conduct (IDVO) 

Today's society is increasingly concerned about the environment. It is therefore important for MOYU to continue to research the environmental impact of their products. To map out the environmental impact, using a life cycle analysis (LCA) is a useful method. Uuuuhh wait, a life what? In this blog I will take you through my research into the LCA of MOYU's A5 hardcover notebook compared to the footprint of a paper notebook.

An LCA is a method for mapping the impact of products, services and human activities on the environment. Characteristic of an LCA is that the entire life cycle of the product is mapped out, from the extraction of raw materials up to and including waste processing. For example, using a computer instead of a notepad seems much more sustainable. But a computer needs power and a data center. And how much impact does building a data center have? Is a computer really that sustainable? All these, perhaps invisible, factors can be included in an LCA. In this way it is possible to assess the total environmental impact of a product. In addition, it indicates where in the chain the environmental impact lies so that alternatives can be offered.

The LCA has been standardized since the 1990s by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the ISO standards 14040 and 14044. The ISO 1440 provides a standard framework to correctly apply the principles and requirements in an LCA. The procedure of an LCA is divided into the following four phases: 

 In phase one, it is clearly mapped out what is being analyzed and its scope. To be able to determine the goal properly, it is necessary to define a precise question. It is also important to determine the target group and the intended application. The scope of the goal is determined by the time frame, the accuracy of the research, the technological scope and finally the method of analysis used. When determining the purpose and scope, it is not only important to collect data on the topic of environmental impact, but the decisions and choices regarding that data are also considered.

 During the second phase, the lifecycle inventory, the product system is defined. The environmental inputs and outputs, or everything defined in phase one, are quantified and converted into functional units. The data is collected through data collection. If qualitative data is needed, questionnaires can be used.

the data has been collected, it is time in phase three to translate the results into an understanding of environmental impacts and societal preferences. Think of the emissions of climate change with different weighting factors or impact factors. Furthermore, possible adjustments to the system, such as transporting the product with a more economical vehicle, are also particularly examined. Various methods for environmental impact assessments can be used for this purpose. Software programs such as EcoChain are usually used for this.

 In the fourth and final phase, the life cycle analysis is interpreted. In this way, a conclusion and recommendation can be made regarding the results of the earlier phases.

During this research, comparisons will be made between two products with the same function. By establishing a functional unit (FU), the different forms of note-taking systems can be compared fairly. Because stone paper and wood pulp do not match in weight and surface area, the FU is determined based on the performance of the notebooks: making notes possible for three years. Since stone paper and wood pulp paper have different service lives, the functional unit is as follows: 

Then the system boundary is determined. The system boundary determines which parts of the chain are included in the calculation and which parts are not. To determine the system boundary of the notebooks, the question 'Which parts fall within the system in view of the functional unit?' is therefore crucial. For example, within an LCA it is not necessary to map out all processes, but it is also possible to look at recycling alone, for example. The system boundary used during this study is called 'Cradle to grave'. Cradle to grave, or cradle to grave, maps the extraction of the raw material up to and including the waste phase. The life phases production, transport and end-of-life are covered, and all inputs and outputs are eligible. About the paper industry, for example, this is from the extraction of the seed from the tree to the burning of the paper. In this case, it therefore does not include recycling.

After it was clear what was going to be analyzed, it is finally time to calculate the LCA. This was done using the software program EcoChain Mobius. This was chosen because EcoChain has an extensive database about all materials of a notebook. For example, it is possible to easily compare products, since there is a lot of data available about different materials, energies, etc. EcoChain uses secondary data and, in addition to their own database, also retrieves data from large databases such as Ecoinvent. As a result, EcoChain already has more than 250,000 products in their database!

By entering the data of the production, transport and end-of-life of both products in EcoChain Mobius, and linking data to it, the total environmental impact is eventually calculated. This has shown that one paper A5 notebook emits 0.4 kilograms of CO2 equivalent. The total emissions of one MOYU erasable Notebook A5 | Hardback | Ring binder is 0.37 kilograms of CO2 equivalent. However, we mentioned earlier that the products are compared based on the FU of three years of use of a notebook. Since MOYU's notebooks are erasable, we have said that 1 MOYU replaces 15 'normal' notebooks in three years. This means that with the purchase of one MOYU erasable Notebook A5 | Hardback | Ring binder saves 5.63 kilograms of CO2 equivalent!

So, buying a MOYU notebook is definitely more sustainable! The saving of 5.63 kilograms of CO2 equivalent is equal to driving a car for 25 kilometers. This means that buying a MOYU does not therefore mean that your entire CO2 footprint is excused. To really combat climate change, people would have to drastically change their entire lifestyle. Buying a MOYU is a good step in the right direction. So don't hesitate and buy a MOYU instead of a paper notebook from now on!

MOYU even more sustainable!?

A reusable notebook: yes, it really exists (and it really works!) 

You may have heard of it: a reusable notebook, also known as an 

. A reusable notebook – you guessed it – can be used more than once. This has to do with the fact that reusable notebooks are made of materials other than pulp paper. For example: whiteboard material, plastic or 

 (as is the case with our MOYU notebooks). 

But… how exactly does such a reusable notebook work? What are the advantages and are there any disadvantages of a reusable notebook? And, which reusable notebook is the right choice for you? We'll explain it step by step below!


There are different materials available to make a reusable notebook. The most common material is whiteboard, which mainly consists of plastic. Just think of a whiteboard as you know it from school or work, on which you write with a marker. Companies like Bambook and Correctbook sell  notebooks made from this material, in which you can also write with a marker. You simply erase the ink with a sponge or cloth.



. Stone paper consists of crushed limestone and a small amount of HDPE. This paper is free from trees, water and bleach. Stone paper is also water-repellent: a property that makes it possible to use stone paper more than once. 


MOYU founder Roel Schatorjé discovered that Frixion ink dries completely on the stone paper, and can be erased with a little water. A stone paper notebook will therefore last you 500 writing turns.


Regardless of the material, the principle behind a reusable notebook is the same. It works as follows:



: Write in the notebook with the appropriate pen or marker.



: On average, it takes between 10 and 12 seconds for the ink to dry.



: If you want to save your notes, you can scan and digitize them using a 

. Some brands offer a special self-designed scan app, but there are also plenty of (free) scan apps available in the Play Store or Apple Store.



: Want to erase your notes? Then erase them with the supplied sponge, eraser or cloth (in combination with some water). A good reusable notebook leaves no stains or haze.

A reusable notebook has many advantages. We'll list the most important ones for you below:

Advantage 1: A reusable notebook is cheaper 

In purchase, a reusable notebook is more expensive than the average pulp paper notebook (with the exception of eg a Moleskine notebook). In the long run, however, a reusable notebook is much cheaper. Depending on the brand you buy, a reusable notebook replaces an average of 15 pulp paper notebooks.



In the end, a reusable notebook will therefore be a cheaper option.

Advantage 2: A reusable notebook gives you more structure and overview 

You probably know all about it: you make notes in your notebook, you write to-do's on a sticky note, you quickly scribble a telephone-conversation-note on the back of a paper document and you make your shopping list on a loose sheet lying somewhere on your desk.



Result… you have no idea where you left which note and you simply lost the overview.



In a reusable notebook (which often has a multifunctional content) you can store all your notes, scribbles and to do's without losing the overview. Is a to-do finished? Then you just erase it and you have a brand new page again. 



You can easily keep a reusable notebook clean and organized, resulting in a better overview.



Advantage 3: A reusable notebook is more sustainable 

Because a reusable notebook lasts many times longer than a paper notebook, it's much more durable in use. Where you would normally need an average of 15 pulp paper notebooks over a period of 2-5 years, now you only need one.



In addition, with many reusable notebooks, the material is also a lot more sustainable than pulp paper. Making pulp paper costs a lot of energy and requires of course two precious raw materials: water and trees. On average, about 10,000 liters of water are needed to produce just one pack of A4 sheets. So (unfortunately) pulp paper is not really that sustainable...



Stone paper, on the other hand, consists only of limestone and a small part of HDPE. No trees are needed to make it. Also, no bleaching agents are needed, because limestone is naturally white as snow. All this together ensures that the CO2 emissions from the production of stone paper are around 67% lower than those associated with creating pulp paper. Add to that the fact that not a single tree has to be felled and not a drop of water is touched… so: stone paper is more sustainable in use, AND in production.

Does a reusable notebook have disadvantages too? It depends. Let's list the most frequently heard disadvantages below.

Disadvantage 1: The writing experience is different from what you're used to 

If you opt for a plastic or whiteboard notebook, you must be okay with writing with a marker instead of a pen. Also, the writing experience of such a notebook is very different from a pulp paper notebook, since you'd be writing on smooth and hard plastic. Compare it to writing on a whiteboard.



If you choose stone paper, you'll write with a pen on the paper like you're used to and the writing experience comes very close to writing on pulp paper. It's almost the same, though stone paper feels a bit smoother, and you'll feel that while writing. However, some people find that this is a lot nicer to write on than pulp paper, so it depends on your personal preference.

Disadvantage 2: The purchase price is higher

As we mentioned earlier, purchasing a reusable notebook is more expensive than purchasing a pulp paper notebook. But: if you regularly use your reusable notebook, you will more than make up for this difference in the longer term!

Disadvantage 3: It's not always perfect for those who are left-handed 

As a left-hander, it can happen that you erase the written ink with your hand, because the ink of reusable notebooks needs a little more drying time. However, it completely depends on where you place your arm and hand ,and how you hold the pen, as there are plenty of left-handed users who don't experience any problem.

Three reasons why a sustainable Christmax box always works

MOYU introduces the first paper flipchart that prevents paper waste at work.



 – Waste of paper in the workplace is rather rule than exception. In fact, 70% of all waste in the workplace consists of 

. Moreover, an average employee in a medium-sized company uses about 10,000 A4 sheets per year. Just that amount of A4 sheets requires 1 tree and no less than 

. However, this is nothing compared to what is needed for the production of paper flipcharts in A1 size. They contribute significantly to paper consumption and waste in the workplace.



This can and should change, was the conclusion of Amsterdam scale-up company MOYU. This company makes erasable writing products from stone paper, a new type of paper whose main ingredient is limestone. No trees, water or bleach is required to make this type of paper. It's currently still relatively unknown in the Netherlands, while it has a lot of potential.



MOYU founder Roel Schatorjé was surprised that the flipcharts of today have not been renewed and developed for a long time: “They're either made of pulp paper (anything but sustainable) or whiteboard material (which mainly consists of plastic). Two of our interns recently came up with the idea to launch the FlipStone. A flipchart made of stone paper, which feels and writes like pulp paper, but at the same time prevents paper waste in the workplace.”



Stone paper is water-repellent, so the text of the supplied Frixion felt-tip pens can easily be wiped off the FlipStone with a damp cloth. The sheets can then be used again, for years in a row. “Why we didn't come up with this idea before, is still a mystery to me. It really is a godsend. We use it every day in the office!” says Roel. “If we had had this in my previous work, mountains of paper would have been saved.”



The MOYU team naturally hopes that erasable writing on stone paper will one day become the norm – rather today than tomorrow. In this way, huge tracts of land full of precious forests and billions of liters of water could be saved, which would of course do our Earth good.



Roel: “We hope to use the FlipStone to tackle paper waste in the workplace and to introduce people to stone paper as a fine and sustainable alternative to pulp paper. It could really make a difference and it fits perfectly with the many sustainable developments that are currently (and fortunately) going on. Roel, founder of MOYU explains: “The problem at the moment is that 'nature' mainly has an economic value. We express the value of trees in the amount of wood they produce.
